The old ‘Corpse Road’, along which coffins from Ambleside were transported for burial to consecrated ground in Rydal, crosses over Rydal Beck and passes the altogether enchanting scene of the Lower Falls. This richly atmospheric setting with the romantic combination of an old bridge clad with trailing ivy, the tumbling white waters of the Beck and the richly mossy rocks, were a famous part of the inspirational ‘Picturesque Movement’.
