'Icons' - Castlefield Junction, Manchester

Close to Castlefield Junction and the junction with the Bridgewater Canal, Castle Street Bridge and Dukes Lock mark the start of the Rochdale Canal. This was the first canal to cross the Pennine barrier and is an enduring icon of the Industrial Revolution. The soaring glass icon of the 47-storey Beetham Tower, the tallest building in Manchester, now dominates the skyline at Castlefield Junction. Seen together, these two iconic features are potent symbols of Manchester’s past and future.
