'Stones that Span the River' - Washgate Bridge, Nr Hollinsclough, Derbyshire/Staffordshire Border
'Stones that Span the River' aims to capture some sense of the dynamic and physical beauty of the wonderful medieval packhorse bridge 'Washgate Bridge' that spans the infant River Dove near to Hollinsclough at the Derbyshire and Staffordshire border. With its original, low parapets to allow clearance for the panniers on the packhorses, and the ancient and largely intact cobbling, this superb packhorse bridge is a richly evocative piece of history. It was here that local farmers brought their sheep to wash prior to shearing and hence the name ‘Washgate’ with the gate coming from the ancient Norse word ‘gata’ meaning a way, path or road.
