'Three Shire Heads' - Cheshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire Border

The beautiful arch of Panniers Pool Bridge crosses the River Dane at ‘Three Shire Heads’, which forms the boundary of the three counties of Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. This striking location is the meeting point of several ancient packhorse routes and the local area is rich in legend and story. Whilst now an area of tranquil beauty, it was once renowned as the gathering point of various lawbreakers and the setting of illegal prizefights, cock fights and an exchange point for counterfeit money. By crossing the River, participants could escape arrest by crossing into another county. The local village of Flash is synonymous with flash men (thieves) and flash money (counterfeit currency).
